Curtis photographed these women riding in 1904. You see their backs — no faces, no names — just four riders moving away across open New Mexico terrain. The Jicarilla are Apache. “Jicarilla” is Spanish for “little basket,” a name given by colonizers who encountered their beautiful weavings.
