How the Camp Keeper values these plates →A Hopi elder meets the camera on his own terms.
Curtis typically photographed a representative man and woman for every tribe he visited as part of his method. This image was published in Volume 12 of The North American Indian — the only volume in the entire twenty-volume series dedicated to a single people. The straight-cut bangs are a traditional Hopi male hairstyle. Curtis returned to Hopi land repeatedly as the project progressed.
