The Huŋkálowaŋpi is a sacred Lakota and Dakota ceremony known as the Making of Relatives. Its name joins hunká — a term of deep respect for parents and ancestors — and lowanpi, to chant. Practiced to adopt individuals into formal, lifelong kinship that goes beyond biological ties, the ceremony centers on the buffalo skull.
